I flipped through today's Straits Times. It was over-saturated with reports on Singapore's Women Table Tennis. Well... It is definitely an achievement getting into Olympics, getting into the finals, competing with the formidable China Team which consists of World No. 1 and 2 and eventually ended up with a Silver medal. Yes yes... It is our 2nd medal since our last win in 1960. Yet... My point is... Aren't we over-basking in our "victory"?
.
We have only one Silver medal and yet, we are so super duper proud of our little achievement. Maybe we are just displaying another unique Singaporean trait - Hao Lian. I wonder what do the citizens of China, American etc etc react to their NUMEROUS medals? Comparing on nearer geohraphical distance, what about out near neighbour Malaysia with a Silver medal in Badminton? Do they "monopolise" the newspaper too? *Hurgh*
.
Of course, we should be happy that a little red dot country like us finally won something on a world platform after so many years of hard work. However, there is no need for us to over-bask in our little victory and make a big deal out of it. I remember we were habouring high hopes of our very 1st GOLD medal in 48 years. Yet, after the defeat to formidable China, we changed our statement and congratulated ourselves profusely on the fact though it is a Silver medal, the girls are GOLDEN. *hurgh*
.
Playing against World No. 1 and 2, chances of us winning the Gold medal is slim. Yet, I did my part as a supportive Singaporean by watching the match cause I wanted to witness the girls putting up a fight. I am definitely thrilled enough that we managed to be competing with China for the Gold medal but not without a fight. I mean... Seriously... Do you really think there was a fight? No doubt that Feng Tian Wei and Li Jiawei won the first set of their respective games but is it a result of them putting up a fight? I seriously do not think so. I personally feel... Either the China players gave them a chance or... The China players just didn't put their heart into the first set. It was probably just a warm-up to them. Look at how we are being thrashed after that.
.
Anyway, we should stop being hao lian and harp on the fact that Singapore finally made it to the big scene. Afterall, are the true Singaporeans representing Singapore? They are our 'imported talents'. I guess we all know what I am trying to drive at without the very need to remind anyone else that these 'imported talents' are rejects from their very own native countries.
